A huge congratulations to everyone at Viking Fotball on reaching the UEFA Champions League for the first time in the club's history.
We have been fortunate to work closely with Viking and follow some of the sporting work behind the results.
They have built patiently, trusted their sporting plan and consistently tried to get more out of the resources they have.
There are obviously hundreds of reasons behind a football club reaching the Champions League, but three things stand out to us.
1. Consistency beats panic
Football makes long-term thinking incredibly difficult.
Lose three matches and suddenly everything is questioned. A player leaves and there is pressure to replace him immediately. Another club bids for your target and suddenly it is tempting to pay more than you planned.
Viking have been remarkably good at avoiding that.
The sporting leadership has had time to work together, the playing style has remained clear, and recruitment has been built around what the team actually needs rather than whatever happens to be available in the market.
That consistency compounds.
After several years, you are no longer starting from scratch every transfer window. You know the squad, you know the profiles you need, and hopefully you already know several of the players who could fill them.
That is one of the biggest lessons we see from successful clubs: do not wait until you need a player to start looking for him.
2. An academy you actually trust
Most clubs say developing their own players is important.
The difficult part is giving them enough opportunities when results matter.
Viking have continued to create pathways for young players and, importantly, given them enough time to develop rather than expecting them to be finished products immediately.
That matters enormously for a club competing against teams with bigger budgets.
Academy players are not only part of the identity of the club. Done well, they improve the squad, protect the transfer budget and can eventually become some of the club's most valuable assets.
You need a good academy.
But you also need the courage to use it.
3. Getting the big recruitment decisions right
You do not need to win every transfer.
But when you commit meaningful resources to a player, you need to get enough of those decisions right.
Players such as Peter Christiansen, Kristoffer Askildsen and Henrik Falchener are good examples of Viking finding players with the potential to become much more valuable inside their environment.
Falchener is perhaps the clearest example.
Viking identified him after his breakthrough with Egersund in the Norwegian second tier and moved early. He joined as a 21-year-old centre-back ahead of the 2025 season.
Fast-forward less than two years and he has become a Norwegian international, travelled to the 2026 World Cup and started for Norway against France.
That is a great recruitment story.
Not because someone found an unknown player with a magic algorithm (even though his on-ball-value metrics were incredible).
But because the club identified potential early, believed the player could fit their environment, acted before the opportunity was obvious to everyone else, and then gave him the platform to develop.
None of these three things are revolutionary.
That is probably the point.
There is no single trick behind building a successful football club.
It is years of consistently making good decisions. Keeping good people. Trusting the plan. Developing your own players. Knowing what you are looking for in the market. And having the patience not to panic when football inevitably gets messy.
That is also a big part of what we believe in at Fokus.

But the real competitive advantage is the sporting process around it.
