Bodø/Glimt: From Norwegian second division to the Champions League

In 2021, FK Bodø/Glimt had just won the Norwegian league title for the first time in the club's history, having been promoted just two years before. Something was clearly happening above the Arctic Circle.

The club had established a distinct playing identity and built a culture centred around constant improvement, always searching for marginal gains both on and off the pitch.

At the same time, the organisation knew the next step would require more than good scouting instincts and strong coaching. To compete consistently against clubs operating with significantly larger budgets, Bodø/Glimt needed to scale the way the football organisation worked.

That was the starting point of the collaboration with Fokus in 2021.

Today, Bodø/Glimt are back-to-back league champions, reaching the knockout stages of the Champions League, and one of the most studied recruitment operations in European football, generating more than €30M in transfer profits while increasing squad value more than 5x over the course of 4 years.

Behind that rise is a deliberate organisational shift: from intuition-led scouting to a structured, data-supported recruitment workflow built around a single source of truth. Fokus has been Bodø/Glimt's technology partner throughout that journey.

    The starting point

Like most clubs of their size, Bodø/Glimt's recruitment operation was spread across spreadsheets, video tools, scouting reports, and informal conversations.

Information existed, but it lived in silos.

Decisions often relied on whoever was in the room, and institutional knowledge risked disappearing whenever a staff member left the club.

For a club competing for talent against organisations operating with significantly larger budgets, that fragmentation represented a strategic risk.

Sporting Director Håvard Sakariassen and his team set out to build a more connected and scalable recruitment structure.

    Building the hub

    The work started with consolidation.

Scouting reports, performance data, contract information, and squad planning all moved into Fokus, creating one shared environment across recruitment, coaching, and sporting leadership.

Suddenly, everyone involved in squad building was looking at the same picture - updated in real time and accessible from anywhere.

That alone changed the tempo of decision-making.

Conversations that previously required days of internal follow-up - who the player was, why the club tracked them, how they fit the game model, and what the long-term plan looked like - could now happen instantly within the same workflow.

Data scouting became deeply integrated into the process.

Using Fokus, the club could continuously filter player pools based on role profiles, tactical fit, age, and performance indicators connected directly to Bodø/Glimt's playing philosophy.

The platform also evolved together with the club. The Fokus tech team continuously developed new features based on feedback from Bodø/Glimt, helping tailor workflows and processes to the club's football identity and operational needs.

    From recruitment to squad architecture

With the operational foundation in place, the focus shifted from individual transfers to long-term squad planning.

Bodø/Glimt now plans positions, successions, and recruitment profiles years ahead. Every shortlist is connected to a defined role and timing, not simply reacting to who left in the previous transfer window.

The club also gained access to tools that strengthened both sporting and financial planning across the organisation.

Fokus Squad Planner gives the sporting department a live overview of positional depth, age balance, contract timelines, and succession scenarios across the squad.

Fokus Finance connects wage structures, amortisation, transfer exposure, and real-time contingency tracking directly to recruitment planning, allowing leadership to understand the financial impact of different sporting decisions before they happen.

At the same time, scouts and analysts work from customised scouting reports and AI-supported report summaries, helping the organisation process and maintain context across large volumes of player evaluations and documentation.

    The results

    5

Consecutive European qualifications, including Champions League knockout stage appearances

    5x

    Squad value growth

    €30M+

    Transfer profits generated

More important than any individual metric is the continuity the club has created.

Staff turnover no longer resets institutional knowledge. New employees step into documented workflows and shared structures rather than starting from scratch.

The club's identity on the pitch is now matched by an operational identity in how the squad is built and managed behind the scenes.

    What other clubs can learn

Bodø/Glimt's story is not about a single tool or a single signing.

It reflects what can happen when recruitment is treated as an organisational capability - one that deserves the same investment in process, structure, and technology as any other core part of the club.

For clubs looking to take a similar step, the principles are straightforward:

    • Centralise information
    • Connect departments around one workflow
    • Build long-term squad planning into daily operations

The clubs creating sustainable competitive advantages today are often the ones where scouting, analysis, finance, and leadership operate within the same structure and the same context.

    The role of Fokus

Fokus provides infrastructure for modern football organisations, connecting scouting, data, squad planning, financial oversight, and recruitment workflows into one shared system.

The platform enables clubs to operationalise their game model, scale recruitment processes, and maintain organisational clarity across departments while adapting workflows to the club's own football identity and structure.

Whether clubs are starting from scratch with implementing modern recruitment processes, or competing in the Champions League searching for marginal gains, Fokus provides the tools, structure, and flexibility to support every stage of organisational development.
